Kremlin Refuses to Confirm Macron Adviser’s Claimed Moscow Visit

(MENAFN) The Kremlin declined Thursday to comment on reports that French President Emmanuel Macron’s diplomatic adviser traveled to Moscow, according to statements from Russian officials.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that Russia is aware the Elysee Palace has neither confirmed nor denied the reports concerning the visit and added: “So, out of a sense of solidarity, we will not confirm or deny it either.”

French media outlets cited sources indicating that Emmanuel Bonne, Macron’s adviser since 2019, reportedly met with Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov on Tuesday.

The visit comes amid ongoing trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi between Russian, Ukrainian, and US representatives aimed at resolving the war in Ukraine, which will enter its fifth year later this month. With European countries playing a limited role in the negotiations, Macron has sought to reopen diplomatic channels with Moscow.

Macron told reporters Tuesday that preparations are underway to resume direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders last met in Moscow in 2022, just days before the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

In December, after an EU summit in Brussels, Macron stated that he believes “it will become useful again to talk to” Putin, adding:
"I think that we, Europeans and Ukrainians, have a vested interest in finding a framework to properly re-engage in this discussion. Otherwise, we'll be talking amongst ourselves with negotiators who will then deal with the Russians alone. That's not ideal,"
