Kremlin Stays Silent on Macron Envoy Covert Trip to Moscow
Responding to French media coverage during a press briefing, spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged Russia's awareness that the Elysee Palace has neither validated nor disputed accounts of the alleged visit.
"So, out of a sense of solidarity, we will not confirm or deny it either," he stated.
A French publication reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources, that Emmanuel Bonne—Macron's adviser since 2019—traveled to Moscow on Tuesday for discussions with Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
Bonne's journey occurred as trilateral negotiations involving Russian, Ukrainian, and American delegates persist in Abu Dhabi aimed at terminating the ongoing conflict, which approaches its fifth anniversary later this month. With Europe largely sidelined from peace discussions, Macron has spearheaded efforts to reestablish diplomatic communication with Moscow.
Macron informed reporters Tuesday that groundwork was progressing to resume direct dialogue between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders previously convened in Moscow during 2022, mere days before the Ukraine conflict erupted.
Last December, the French president told journalists following an EU summit in Brussels that he believes "it will become useful again to talk to" Putin.
"I think that we, Europeans and Ukrainians, have a vested interest in finding a framework to properly re-engage in this discussion. Otherwise, we'll be talking amongst ourselves with negotiators who will then deal with the Russians alone. That's not ideal," Macron said.
